The MULTUS U4000 and U5000 are the largest, heaviest-duty machines in Okuma’s premium U-series — built not for compact footprint or exotic axis coordination, but for genuinely large, heavy components that need substantial turning torque and machining-center freedom in the same setup. Where the U3000 tops out around 1,500mm between centers, the U4000/U5000 platform extends to 2,000mm on the U4000 and as far as 3,000mm on the U5000, with a bed and traveling column built to hold rigidity over that entire length.
The U4000 commonly uses an A2-8 spindle running up to 4,200 min⁻¹ at 22/15 kW. The U5000 steps up to a heavier A2-11 spindle at up to 3,000 min⁻¹, 37/30 kW and as much as 1,413/1,050 N·m of torque — figures that put it firmly in the class of machines built for roughing large-diameter forgings and castings, not just finishing smaller precision parts. Both share the same H1 milling head, 240° B-axis and CAPTO C6 tooling as the rest of the MULTUS U range, so the same simultaneous 5-axis capability applies even at this scale.
As with the U3000, configuration matters enormously here: 1SC and 2SC machines use a tailstock, while 1SW and 2SW machines replace it with an opposing spindle for automatic part transfer and back-working, with the “2” variants adding a lower V12 turret for parallel machining. On a machine this size, the practical difference between configurations isn’t cosmetic — a 2SW U5000 handling a 3-meter shaft with simultaneous upper and lower machining is a fundamentally different repair problem to a simpler 1SC tailstock version.

Which OSP Control Does the MULTUS U4000 / U5000 Use?
Current MULTUS U4000 and U5000 machines run OSP-P500 with the same 19-inch display and revised operator panel as the U3000. Because these machines run at significantly higher torque and over much longer beds, the control’s thermal-compensation and geometric-error correction routines carry more weight here — a small thermal drift over a 3-meter span has a much bigger absolute effect than the same drift over a 1-meter machine.
As with the U3000, confirming the exact configuration (1SC/1SW/2SC/2SW) alongside the control generation is essential before ordering any replacement board, since the I/O and axis map differ substantially between a simple tailstock machine and a full opposing-spindle-plus-lower-turret configuration.

High-torque spindle drive faults

Long-bed Y-axis and traveling column faults
Over a 2,000-3,000mm bed length, feed-system faults on the traveling column can show up as accuracy loss that varies depending on where along the bed the machine is cutting — a symptom pattern that’s essentially unique to the longer U4000/U5000 configurations and doesn’t appear on shorter MULTUS U machines.
B-axis head faults under heavy milling load
The same 240° B-axis mechanism used across the MULTUS U range sees heavier cutting forces on the U4000/U5000 given the class of parts these machines handle, so clamp-confirmation and rigidity-related faults are somewhat more common here than on lighter U3000 or U1000/U2000 machines running lighter cuts.
