What Is Okuma CNC Testing & Diagnostics?

Not every fault comes with an obvious cause. An alarm code points you toward a category of problem, not always the exact component — and a symptom like a jerky axis or an intermittent shutdown can trace back to the control, a drive, a sensor, or genuine mechanics. Testing & Diagnostics is the process of finding out which, before anyone commits to a repair. We use specialized test equipment, the OSP control's own I/O monitor, and a systematic read of the alarm category to isolate the actual fault rather than guessing and swapping parts until something works.

Okuma alarms are organized into letter categories — A, B, C, D and P — each pointing to a different functional area of the control. Reading that category correctly is the first real step of diagnosis, and it's one a lot of guesswork skips. We treat troubleshooting as a discipline: read the alarm, check the I/O status for the relevant inputs and outputs, and narrow the fault down to a specific board or component before recommending any repair.

Why Diagnosis Comes First

A repair quote based on a guessed cause is a gamble dressed up as a solution. We've seen plenty of machines that already had one part swapped — sometimes more than one — before the fault was properly traced, and the actual cause turned out to be somewhere else entirely. Real diagnosis costs a little time upfront, but it means the repair that follows actually fixes the problem instead of postponing it.

Okuma's alarm categories exist precisely because different faults need different diagnostic paths. An A-series alarm points somewhere different than a P-series one, and treating them the same way wastes time and, often, money on parts that were never the problem.

Sometimes the answer is genuinely inconclusive without further testing, and we'll tell you that directly rather than push a repair to close the job. A clear "we need to test X before we know" is a better outcome than a confident guess that turns out wrong.
