P-Series Control — THINC-OSP GenerationWhat OSP-P200 Is
OSP-P200 is where Okuma’s P-series control became genuinely global. Unlike OSP-P100, which was exclusive to Okuma America, P200 was developed as a collaboration between Okuma America and Okuma Japan to create a single worldwide CNC platform — branded THINC-OSP for its open architecture. It’s this generation that introduced Okuma’s Application Programming Interface (API), letting outside developers write data into the control directly rather than working around a closed system.
The API’s first real customer was a large manufacturer in Dayton, who built custom applications for changing tool offsets and calculating cut times. That success led to another Okuma America/Japan collaboration to build out both the under-side and top-side of the API, making it commercially available to developers, distributors, customers and partners. In 2008, this momentum became Partners in THINC, a manufacturing collaboration specifically focused on developing apps for OSP — an ecosystem that’s still active today through Okuma’s App Store.

OSP-P200 was built in several machine-specific variants, each tuned to the process it controls. The “A” suffix denotes the later advanced revision of each.

Board-Level Components We Repair
Most OSP-P200 faults trace back to one of the following boards or assemblies rather than requiring a full control swap.
Main CPU Board
Runs the core NC processing and hosts the THINC API layer. Faults here can range from a control that won’t boot to intermittent alarm stops.
Servo Interface Board
Bridges the control to the axis and spindle drives. A common source of axis-error alarms on machines of this age.
Display Assembly
The panel used for this generation’s operator interface, plus the driver board behind it. We repair both and support modern LCD replacement.
PLC Board
Handles machine-side logic — interlocks, doors, coolant, tool changer sequencing. Faults here often show up as B or C-level alarms.
Memory & Backup Battery Board
Holds parameters and part programs between power cycles. A dying backup battery is one of the most common root causes of a control that “forgets” settings.
I/O Modules
Handle input and output signals to and from the machine’s sensors and actuators. Faults here can cause isolated, hard-to-reproduce alarms.
Alarm Classification & Common Codes
OSP-P200 alarms follow the same five-level severity classification carried through every later OSP generation. Knowing which type you’re seeing helps narrow down the likely cause before we even look at the machine.
Alarm-P
Stops NC operation entirely. All NC functions inoperative.
Alarm-A
Shuts off power to X/Z-axis servo drives.
Alarm-B
Machine remains inoperative until reset and cleared.
Alarm-C
No new program can run until cleared; panel operations remain available.
Alarm-D
Least severe; typically informational or a minor operational block.

Common OSP-P200 Faults
Control won’t boot or hangs on startup
Often a main CPU board or power supply fault rather than a total control failure — worth a proper diagnosis before assuming the whole unit needs replacing.
THINC API apps stop responding
Sometimes a software or app-update issue rather than a hardware fault, but if third-party apps consistently fail across a reboot, it’s worth having the underlying control electronics checked too.
Parameters or programs lost after power-down
A classic sign of a failing backup battery or memory board, common on units that have been running for many years.
Intermittent, hard-to-reproduce alarms
Often an I/O module issue rather than a wiring problem — we test signal paths individually to isolate the cause.
