What Is the Okuma Cadet Series?
The Cadet Series was Okuma’s entry-level, general-purpose 2-axis CNC lathe line, produced through the 1990s before being discontinued as Okuma’s current lathe lineup took over. Despite being long out of production, a genuinely large number of Cadet machines are still running reliably in job shops and small manufacturing operations today — these were built to last, and the basic 2-axis turning work they handle hasn’t fundamentally changed. Many of the machines we see are still on their original spindle and control electronics decades after leaving the factory.
The lineup spans two practical size classes. The compact LNC-8 (and LNC-8C variant) handles smaller work with a swing over bed around 15.75 inches and turning diameters up to roughly 9.84 inches, running spindle speeds up to 4,200 RPM on a 10-15 HP motor. The larger L1420/LNC10 scales up considerably, with a swing over bed of 24-28 inches and turning diameters up to 18 inches, running a more powerful 20-30 HP spindle drive. Both size classes share the same basic architecture: a 12-position turret, straightforward 2-axis (X/Z) control, and simple, direct operation without the multitasking capability of Okuma’s current lathes.
Because these machines predate current control technology entirely, they’re a genuinely different repair proposition than a current LB or GENOS L Series lathe — parts availability, control-board repair techniques, and even basic diagnostic approaches differ meaningfully from anything Okuma currently sells.

Which OSP Control Does the Cadet Series Use?
Cadet Series machines commonly run OSP700L, a floppy-disk era control, or the somewhat later OSP5020L. Both are genuinely legacy control generations — well before the OSP-P100 series that Okuma introduced for its next generation of lathes — and parts, diagnostic tools and repair techniques for these boards differ substantially from anything current.
Given how long these controls have been out of production, confirming the exact control revision on a specific machine is one of the most important first steps in any repair — even machines with the same nominal control designation can have meaningfully different board revisions depending on production year.
