What Are Okuma & Howa Lathes?

The Howa-Okuma lathes were a joint-venture product line built in partnership with Howa Machinery, badged “Okuma & Howa” and produced from the late 1980s through the late 1990s. What genuinely sets this line apart from every other legacy Okuma platform we support is the control: rather than Okuma’s own OSP system, Howa-Okuma machines commonly shipped with FANUC controls — the 18T series or the earlier Series O-T — making this the one Okuma-badged legacy line where FANUC control expertise, not OSP expertise, is the relevant repair skill set. It’s a genuine outlier in an otherwise OSP-consistent legacy lineup, and worth flagging clearly before any repair conversation starts.

The lineup spanned genuine variety in configuration. The ACT series (ACT-3, ACT-4, ACT-20, ACT-35) covers single-spindle turning centers scaling from compact machines with roughly 18-inch swing up to larger units with 21-inch-plus swing and 30 HP spindle motors. The 2SP series added twin-spindle capability (2SP-35H) for simultaneous or sequential machining across two spindles, while the 2SP-V3 brought that twin-spindle concept to a vertical turning center configuration — a genuinely different mechanical layout from the horizontal ACT machines.

Okuma marketed these machines toward automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking applications, and a meaningful number are still running in shops today — mechanically robust enough to outlast several control-technology generations, even as the FANUC controls they shipped with have themselves become a legacy repair specialty.

Which Control Does the Howa-Okuma Line Use?

Unlike every other Okuma legacy platform we cover, Howa-Okuma lathes commonly run FANUC controls — the 18T series on later machines, and the earlier FANUC Series O-T on earlier units. This is a genuinely different repair specialty from OSP-based Okuma machines, and we approach diagnosis and board-level repair on these controls with FANUC-specific expertise rather than treating them as an OSP variant.

Given how these machines blend Okuma mechanical engineering with FANUC control electronics, confirming the exact control series and revision is one of the most important first steps — FANUC 18T and Series O-T controls differ substantially in both hardware and available diagnostic approaches.

Board-level faults on these FANUC controls follow FANUC-specific diagnostic and repair patterns rather than OSP patterns — we approach these with dedicated FANUC control expertise, including the older Series O-T units that predate the 18T generation.

Twin-spindle synchronization faults (2SP models)

On 2SP-35H and 2SP-V3 machines, faults affecting only coordinated operation between the two spindles — while each spindle works fine independently — point toward the control’s synchronization logic rather than either spindle drive individually.

Two-range spindle gear faults (ACT-4)

On ACT-4 machines with a mechanical 2-range spindle (low 35-1,050 RPM, high 35-3,500 RPM), faults affecting only one range while the other works normally point toward that specific gear range’s mechanical engagement rather than the spindle drive electronics.

Turret faults (drum vs. bi-directional)

Different ACT models use different turret mechanisms — drum-type or bi-directional — so confirming which type is fitted before diagnosing an indexing fault matters, since the two mechanisms fail in different ways.

Display and operator panel faults

FANUC-specific display and panel repair patterns apply here, distinct from the OSP-generation displays found on other legacy Okuma platforms.
