What Is the Okuma MacTurn Series?
The MacTurn Series was Okuma’s pioneering mill-turn platform — the machine concept that eventually evolved into the current MULTUS lineup. What made MacTurn genuinely distinctive, and still shapes how we diagnose it today, is its dual independent turret architecture: an upper turret carrying a dual-function spindle head with an integral milling motor spindle, B-axis and compound Y-axis motion, working alongside a lower turret offering purely turning-focused stations — and crucially, the two can machine the same part independently or simultaneously. That simultaneous-operation capability was genuinely ahead of its time when MacTurn was introduced.
The main spindle carries full contouring C-axis capability at 0.001° increments, and the upper turret’s B-axis provides similarly fine control for complex angled and contoured milling work. Tool capacity scaled dramatically depending on configuration — from a 44-tool base offering up to as many as 76 stations on the largest twin-spindle configurations, reflecting how much operation variety a single MacTurn setup was expected to handle without a tool-magazine bottleneck.
The lineup spanned a genuine size range: MacTurn 50 for smaller work up through MacTurn 250, 350, and 550 for progressively larger parts, with sub-spindle (2S) variants adding twin-spindle multitasking to the base mill-turn concept. Which OSP Control Does the MacTurn Series Use?
MacTurn machines were built across several control generations depending on production year: earlier units run OSP7000L, mid-generation units run OSP-E100L or OSP-U100L, and later units run OSP-P100L. Given the platform’s long production run and genuine size range, confirming the exact control generation is one of the most important first steps on any MacTurn repair.
