What OSP7000 Is

OSP7000 is Okuma’s upgraded floppy-disk-era control, built on the same basic architecture as OSP5000L/5000L-G/5020L but with improved functions for operation and maintenance. It’s also documented under the alternate designation OSP700 — the same control family under a shorter name, commonly found on Crown and Cadet series lathes as well as early LB-series machines.

One genuinely distinctive detail of this generation: the full-size OSP7000 control used a 12-inch color CRT as standard, but the compact OSP700L variant actually shipped with an 8-inch monochrome STN LCD — making it one of the earliest Okuma controls to use a flat panel display at all, well before LCDs became standard across the rest of the OSP lineup. Both display types are now available as modern LCD upgrade kits when the original screen fails.

Alarm Classification & Common Codes

OSP7000 alarms follow the same severity classification carried through every later OSP generation. Knowing which type you’re seeing helps narrow down the likely cause before we even look at the machine.

Alarm-P

Stops NC operation entirely. All NC functions inoperative.

A

Alarm-A

Shuts off power to axis servo drives — the classic “axis servo error” alarm on this generation.

B

Alarm-B

Machine remains inoperative until reset and cleared.

C

Alarm-C

No new program can run until cleared; panel operations remain available.

D

Alarm-D

Least severe; typically informational or a minor operational block.

Common OSP7000 Faults

CRT display dim, distorted or dead

A classic age-related failure on the full-size unit’s 12-inch color CRT. We repair the monitor electronics, and can also fit a modern LCD replacement where the original is beyond economical repair.

Compact 700L LCD fading or unreadable

The early monochrome STN LCD on 700L units ages differently from a CRT — usually the panel itself or its driver board, which we test independently.

Parameters or programs lost after power-down

A classic sign of a failing backup battery or memory-related board — extremely common on controls that have been running continuously for decades.

Axis servo alarms during warm-up

Often the servo interface board rather than the servo motor or drive itself — worth a proper diagnosis before condemning the whole servo system.
