What a Bar Feeder Is
A bar feeder automatically pushes raw bar stock through a lathe’s headstock and into the spindle, so the machine can turn one part after another from a single length of bar without an operator loading each piece by hand. Of everything in Okuma’s standard automation lineup, it’s the simplest and most broadly applicable — Okuma’s own documentation describes it as a genuine entry-level option that works with most lathes, not a purpose-built system limited to a narrow model list like ARMROID or the ORL series.
Because it’s mechanically straightforward and doesn’t require deep robotics or vision programming, installation is comparatively fast and inexpensive, which is exactly why it’s often the first automation step a shop takes before moving on to more complex systems. It still needs to communicate with the machine’s OSP control, though — interlock signals confirm bar presence, remnant ejection and feed completion before the machine is allowed to cycle.

Even a simple system has electronics that can fail — most bar feeder faults trace back to the feed drive, the interlock interface, or a sensor rather than the mechanical tube itself. Here’s what we work on.
Interlock Interface Boards
Confirm bar presence and feed status to the OSP control. Faults here typically show up as the machine refusing to cycle even with bar loaded correctly.
Feed Drive Unit
Pushes the bar through the guide tube at the correct feed rate. A drive fault typically shows up as inconsistent or stalled feeding.
Bar Presence & Length Sensors
Detect how much usable bar remains and trigger remnant ejection at the right point. A fault here can waste material or stop production early.
Feed Position Feedback
Tracks exactly how far the bar has advanced. Drift here can cause parts to come out short or with inconsistent stock allowance.
Feeder Control Panel
Sets feed parameters independently of the machine’s own OSP interface. We repair the display and interface boards behind it.
Power Supply Units
Regulates voltage to the feeder’s control and drive electronics — one of the first things we check on any fault.

Machine won’t cycle despite bar being loaded
Almost always an interlock interface fault rather than an actual loading problem — we check the signal path before assuming the bar isn’t seated correctly.
Inconsistent or stalled feeding
Typically a feed drive fault rather than the bar itself binding in the tube — we test the drive electronics before recommending mechanical inspection.
Remnant not ejecting at the right length
Usually a length sensor drifting out of calibration rather than a mechanical fault — worth checking electronically before adjusting mechanical stops.
Feeder control panel unresponsive
Display and interface board faults are common on units that have been running for years — usually repairable at board level.
