What an FMS Is, and an Honest Note on Scope
A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) connects multiple machine tools — sometimes different models entirely — into a single automated production system, with material handling that moves parts between machines and adapts to changing part mixes and volumes. Okuma partners with specialist FMS integrators, most notably Fastems and Daifuku, to design and install these systems, which typically involve significant material-handling infrastructure like conveyors, AGVs or rail-guided carts alongside the machines themselves.
We want to be upfront about where we fit: a full FMS installation, including the material-handling system and integrator-side engineering, is genuinely a job for those specialist integrators, not for an independent electronics repair company. Where we do add real value is on the OSP control side — commissioning the machine tools’ own control integration into the FMS, and repairing the control electronics on machines already running as part of an FMS cell.

What’s Involved
An FMS combines several distinct systems. Here’s a general picture, and specifically what falls into our scope of work.
Machine Tool Nodes
The individual Okuma machines in the system — this is where our OSP control expertise applies.
Material Handling System
Conveyors, AGVs or rail carts moving parts between machines — installed and supported by the FMS integrator.
Central FMS Controller
Coordinates the overall system schedule — managed by the integrator’s own software.

What We Repair on the OSP Side of an FMS
Our repair scope is specifically the machine tool’s own control electronics and its integration layer with the FMS — not the integrator’s material-handling hardware or central scheduling software. Here’s what we work on.
OSP Integration Boards
Let the individual machine’s control communicate with the FMS’s central controller. Faults here typically show up as a machine dropping out of the FMS schedule.
Machine-Side Pallet & APC Electronics
Most FMS nodes rely on the machine’s own APC or pallet interface — the same components we repair on standalone pallet systems.
Communication Interface Sensors
Confirm the machine is correctly signaling its status (ready, busy, fault) to the FMS controller. A fault here can strand a machine outside the schedule.
Axis & Spindle Feedback
Standard machine feedback electronics — faults here affect the individual node the same way they would outside an FMS context.
Machine-Level OSP Display
The operator’s window into that individual machine’s status within the larger system. We repair the display and interface boards behind it.
Power Supply Units
Regulates voltage to the machine’s control and drive electronics — one of the first things we check on any fault.
