What the Okuma Gantry Loader Is
The Okuma Gantry Loader (OGL) is a high-speed, overhead loading system for lathes and grinders, moving stock into the machine and finished parts out from above rather than from the front or side. Its moving headstock lets the loader enter the machine regardless of where the turret is positioned, and an integrated turn-over device allows a complete part to be machined without manual intervention. Despite the automation, the machine stays accessible for manual setup or operation at any time.
OGL is genuinely modular — length and gripper design can be customized to the part, and stocker tables come in multiple sizes depending on volume. It’s programmed through g-codes and m-codes with an integrated teach pendant rather than a separate PLC system, using the same Okuma OSP control as the machine itself. Okuma’s own Factory Automation division describes OGL as something that can be retrofitted onto experienced machines, not just ordered factory-integrated on a new one — reported ROI typically runs 6 to 9 months.

What We Repair on OGL
Because OGL runs through the machine’s own OSP control via g-code and m-code programming, most faults trace back to a specific drive, sensor or interface board rather than the rail system itself. Here’s what we work on.
OSP Integration Boards
Coordinate the loader’s g-code/m-code program with the machine’s own cycle. Faults here typically show up as the loader failing to sync with the machine.
Headstock & Gripper Servo Drives
Drive the moving headstock along the rail and the swivel gripper hand. A single failed drive typically shows up as the loader losing position.
Turn-Over Device Sensors
Confirm the part has been correctly flipped before machining continues. A fault here can cause a part to be machined on the wrong face.
Position Encoders
Report the headstock’s exact position back to the control. A failing encoder causes drift that’s easy to mistake for rail wear.
Teach Pendant & Interface
The panel used to program and jog the loader. We repair the display and interface boards behind it.
Power Supply Units
Regulates voltage to the loader’s control and drive electronics — one of the first things we check on any fault.
