What Is the Okuma GA / GP Series?
The GA and GP designations aren’t two separate machine lines — they’re two wheelhead configurations of the same underlying CNC cylindrical (O.D.) grinder platform. The GP (“plain head”) version grinds straight outer diameters, while the GA (“angle head”) version tilts the wheelhead, letting the same machine grind a diameter and an adjacent face or shoulder in a single setup without repositioning the part. Choosing between GA and GP at the time of order (or identifying which one you have) is the single most important configuration detail on this platform.
Within that GA/GP split, Okuma offers two genuinely different size classes. The W-series (14/15W, 25/26W) is built around a compact wheelhead-traverse structure — rather than moving the workpiece, the wheelhead itself travels, which shortens the work line and lets the whole machine occupy a smaller footprint. These are aimed squarely at small, high-volume parts: automotive, motorcycle, hydraulic and appliance components in mass production. The F-series (34/44F and larger) takes the opposite approach: a heavy base design and a hydrodynamic wheel spindle built specifically to hold accuracy on larger parts, with grinding capability spanning straight plunge, multi-plunge, cylindrical traverse, face plunge, tapered traverse, and complex taper/arc form grinding.
Both size classes run on Okuma’s OSP control with simultaneous 2-axis control, and the F-series in particular is built to be genuinely flexible — Okuma markets it as handling a wide variety of workpiece shapes through simple data changes rather than mechanical reconfiguration, making it a natural fit for automated, flexible manufacturing cells.

Which OSP Control Does the GA / GP Series Use?
Older GA/GP machines commonly run legacy controls including OSP700G, OSP-U10G or OSP5000G-G, still confirmed on in-service units, while current-generation machines run Okuma’s newer OSP-P300 or OSP-P500. Given how many of these grinders remain in service for decades, confirming the exact control generation is one of the first things we check on any repair call.
Because simultaneous 2-axis control underlies both taper/arc form grinding and standard straight grinding, a fault affecting only complex form work — while straightforward plunge grinding remains fine — points toward the control’s coordinated-motion logic rather than a general axis fault.

Angle-head vs. plain-head wheelhead faults
On GA (angle-head) machines, faults specific to the wheelhead’s tilt mechanism need to be diagnosed separately from the main traverse and spindle drive — a GP (plain-head) machine simply doesn’t have this mechanism, so confirming which configuration is fitted is the first step in any wheelhead-related repair.
Wheelhead-traverse faults (W-series)
Because the compact W-series moves the wheelhead itself rather than the workpiece, faults affecting X/Z positioning need to be traced through the wheelhead’s own carriage and drive system — a genuinely different mechanical layout than a machine where the table or workhead moves instead.
Hydrodynamic wheel spindle faults (F-series)
On the larger F-series machines, spindle faults often trace to the hydrodynamic bearing system specifically — the film of oil that supports the spindle under load — rather than a conventional ball-bearing wear pattern, which changes how we approach diagnosis and repair.
Wheel dresser and workhead faults
O.D. wheel dresser faults typically show up as inconsistent wheel profile or surface finish degradation over time, while workhead faults on CT-spec machines (dead/live workhead) need to be isolated from the tailstock and chuck-work function specifically.
Display and operator panel faults
Standard OSP display and panel faults follow the same repair pattern as other Okuma machines, whichever control generation is fitted.
