What Is the Okuma Captain Series?

The Captain Series was Okuma’s mid-size, more feature-rich lathe line through the 2000s, effectively the next step up from the entry-level Cadet Series. Rather than a single fixed configuration, the base Captain L370 was available in progressively more capable variants: the plain L370 for straightforward 2-axis turning, the L370M adding live milling capability, and the L370MW adding a sub-spindle alongside live tooling for genuine small-machine multitasking — turning, milling and part transfer to a second spindle all on one machine. This let a shop specify exactly the capability level it needed rather than paying for multitasking features it wouldn’t use.

Because the Captain L370 had a genuinely long production run through the 2000s, machines still in service today can be found running three distinct control generations depending on when they were built: earlier units on OSP-E100L, mid-run units on OSP-P100, and later units on OSP-P200L. That control-generation spread is one of the most important things to confirm on any Captain Series repair, since parts, diagnostic approaches and even basic operation differ meaningfully between these three generations despite all being nominally “the same machine.”

Mechanically, the base L370 offered a swing over bed around 20.8 inches, turning diameters up to roughly 14.5-14.6 inches, spindle speeds spanning 45-4,500 RPM depending on configuration, and a hydraulic tailstock with a power quill as standard equipment on most units.

Which OSP Control Does the Captain Series Use?

Captain L370 machines were built across a genuine control-generation transition: earlier units run OSP-E100L, mid-run units run OSP-P100, and later units run OSP-P200L. This is one of the more control-diverse legacy lines we service, precisely because the model stayed in production long enough to see Okuma’s control technology genuinely evolve underneath it, rather than being a short production run on a single fixed control generation.

Sub-spindle synchronization faults (MW variant)

On L370MW machines, part-transfer faults between main and sub-spindle usually trace to synchronization timing or the sub-spindle’s own clamping mechanism rather than the main spindle drive — we isolate which spindle is actually at fault before recommending repair.

Control-generation identification issues

Given how many Captain L370 machines exist across three control generations, misidentifying the control before ordering parts is a common and entirely avoidable source of delay — we confirm the exact control designation from the nameplate or startup screen before proceeding on any repair.

Turret indexing faults
