What OSP-P100 Is

OSP-P100 is the very first control in Okuma’s P-series lineage, and it has a genuinely unusual origin story: it began as a side project by a small team of Okuma America engineers, who converted an LB-25 running an OSP-5020 into an open-architecture CNC machine. Caterpillar, a member of the Open Modular Architecture Controls (OMAC) group, tested the resulting machine and gave feedback on what worked. That feedback led Okuma America to formally present the business case to Okuma Japan, who agreed to collaborate and bring P100 to market — a control that started as an internal experiment before becoming a production reality.

Unlike the later OSP-P200, which was a joint global development between Okuma America and Okuma Japan, OSP-P100 was exclusive to Okuma America. Its first production customer was a major orthopedic manufacturer in Indiana, who installed it across 75 machines with a custom traceability application — an early demonstration of the open, Windows-based architecture that let customers run their own PC applications directly on the control, a genuine step forward from the legacy generations before it.

OSP-P100 alarms follow the same five-level severity classification carried through every later OSP generation. Knowing which type you’re seeing helps narrow down the likely cause before we even look at the machine.

Alarm-P

Stops NC operation entirely. All NC functions inoperative.

A

Alarm-A

Shuts off power to X/Z-axis servo drives.

B

Alarm-B

Machine remains inoperative until reset and cleared.

C

Alarm-C

No new program can run until cleared; panel operations remain available.

D

Alarm-D

Least severe; typically informational or a minor operational block.

Common OSP-P100 Faults

Control won’t boot or hangs on startup

Often a main CPU board or power supply fault rather than a total control failure — worth a proper diagnosis before assuming the whole unit needs replacing.

Custom PC applications stop responding

Since OSP-P100 was designed to run customer PC applications directly, a fault here is sometimes the underlying Windows-based platform rather than the application itself — worth checking the control’s own health first.

Parameters or programs lost after power-down

A classic sign of a failing backup battery or memory board, common on units that have been running for two decades or more.

Intermittent, hard-to-reproduce alarms

Often an I/O module issue rather than a wiring problem — we test signal paths individually to isolate the cause.

Machines That Ran OSP-P100

OSP-P100 launched on a limited set of Okuma America machines before the architecture expanded globally with OSP-P200. A genuine population of machines from this generation remains active today.
