What Is Axis Drive & Feed System Repair?

The servo drive tells the motor how much to turn; the feed system is what actually converts that rotation into precise linear position — the ball screw, the linear guide, and the feedback that confirms where the axis really ended up. When positioning accuracy drifts, surface finish degrades, or an axis seems to hesitate on direction changes, the cause is often here rather than in the drive electronics themselves.

Ball screws wear over time: backlash increases, friction goes up, and the CNC control's backlash compensation can mask that wear for a while, but compensation doesn't fix a worn screw — it just adjusts the target position to account for the play. Eventually the wear exceeds what compensation can reasonably correct, and the screw needs repair or replacement. On more precise setups, a linear scale mounted directly to the moving table gives true mechanical position feedback independent of the ball screw entirely, in what's called a dual-loop configuration — and when that feedback disagrees with the motor-side encoder, that mismatch itself is diagnostic information.

Why Backlash Compensation Isn't a Fix

Every CNC control has backlash compensation parameters, and it's tempting to treat a growing backlash number as something you just keep adjusting. But compensation only offsets the target position to account for known play — it doesn't reduce the actual mechanical play in the ball screw, and it doesn't improve as the screw keeps wearing. You can compensate right up until the wear exceeds what any reasonable offset can correct, and at that point, you cannot make accurate parts regardless of the settings.

The real question isn't "what's the compensation value now" but "how has it changed over time, and is the screw itself still within tolerance." We measure actual backlash rather than just reading the current compensation setting, because a compensation value alone tells you what's been masked, not what condition the mechanism is actually in.

When a screw or guide genuinely needs replacement, we'll tell you that directly. Continuing to compensate past that point just means degrading part quality until someone notices.
