Independent repair, setup and reconfiguration support for the control electronics, servo drives and sensors behind Okuma’s ARMROID built-in robot system.

What ARMROID Is

ARMROID is Okuma’s built-in robot system — a four-axis robotic arm packaged directly inside the machine tool itself, rather than bolted on as a separate cell. It was the first system of its kind, integrated inside CNC lathes and mill-turn centers rather than standing beside them, which saves floor space and removes the cost and complexity of hiring a third-party systems integrator.

The robot and the machine share a single OSP operation panel. An operator sets start and end coordinates through Okuma’s ROID Navi software, and the system automatically generates a collision-free motion path — no separate robot programming knowledge required. A built-in Collision Avoidance System keeps the robot and machine tool aware of each other’s position at all times, and the arm can also be jogged manually using the machine’s pulse handle for precise positioning.

We support the control electronics behind this system — repair, plus setup, reconfiguration and optimization for machines that already have ARMROID installed. Because ARMROID is built into the machine tool at the factory for a specific set of models, it isn’t something we retrofit onto an older machine that wasn’t originally equipped with it. Where we add value is afterward: recommissioning the robot after a machine move, reconfiguring end effector setups, tuning ROID Navi programs, and diagnosing and repairing faults at component level. End Effector Options

ARMROID can carry up to three end effectors on board at once, automatically exchanging between them mid-cycle. Each has its own drive and sensor electronics that we diagnose and repair individually.

Workpiece Hand (Parallel)

Parallel-jaw gripper for loading and unloading flange-type or block workpieces.

Workpiece Hand (3-Jaw)

3-jaw gripper for holding shaft-type billets around their end faces, up to 10kg.

Support Rollers

Rollers that steady a shaft-type part during turning to suppress chatter.

Coolant/Air Blast Nozzle

Nozzle that clears the cutting zone of chips and swarf during and after machining.

Common ARMROID Faults

One joint loses position or won’t move

Usually a single joint’s servo drive or encoder rather than the whole arm — we test each joint’s drive electronics individually before recommending a repair.

Robot stops or won’t run in automatic mode

Often traced to the collision avoidance system or a communication fault between the robot control interface and the OSP, rather than a mechanical jam.

ROID Navi interface unresponsive or frozen

Display and interface board faults are common on units that have been running for years — usually repairable at board level.

End effector exchange failures

Usually a sensor or drive fault at the exchange station rather than a problem with the effector itself — we test each independently.
