What Is Okuma CNC Machine Calibration?

Calibration is the process of measuring how a machine actually performs against what it's supposed to do, then correcting the gap. Two different questions matter here: accuracy, meaning how close the machine gets to the commanded position, and repeatability, meaning how consistently it returns to that same position across repeated cycles. A machine can be highly repeatable and still consistently off-target, or accurate on average while wandering cycle to cycle — they're measured differently and both matter for the parts you're actually cutting.

We use a ballbar to run a circular interpolation test across axis pairs, comparing the actual traced path against a theoretically perfect circle. In about thirty minutes, it reveals backlash, servo mismatch between axes, axis reversal errors, squareness problems and geometric inaccuracies — a fast, detailed snapshot of overall machine health. For tighter-tolerance work, a laser interferometer measures linear positioning accuracy across the full travel of each axis, producing a compensation table the control uses to correct measured errors going forward.

Current Okuma controls also include built-in thermal compensation — the Thermo Active Stabilizer monitors bed, spindle and ambient temperature and adjusts toolpaths automatically to offset thermal expansion, which can cut thermal positioning error by 70–80% on its own. Calibration and thermal compensation work together: one corrects for mechanical wear and geometry, the other for heat. Neither replaces the other.

This service covers linear positioning and geometry on any Okuma machine. Why We Check Squareness, Not Just Positioning

A quick ballbar run and a compensation update can make positioning numbers look good without ever checking whether the axes are actually square to each other. Squareness, parallelism and perpendicularity are separate measurements — a machine can compensate its way to accurate positioning along each individual axis while still cutting slightly out-of-square parts, because the compensation never addressed the underlying geometric problem.

A complete calibration checks both: the positioning accuracy that compensation can correct, and the geometric relationships between axes that usually can't be compensated away and may point to a mechanical issue instead.
